2005 is the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. On the 31st August there was a visit by "Lord Nelson" and "Lady Hamilton" at the unveiling of a Birmingham Civic Trust commemorative plaque of Nelson's visit to Birmingham in 1802 (he stayed at the Styles Hotel opposite) in Temple Row opposite the House of Fraser, by Ms Anna Tribe a descendant of Nelson, and Dr Nicholas Slope Chairman of the Nelson Society. Also the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress were present. Music was provided the TS Sutton Coldfield Sea Cadet Band. Members of the Royal Marine Society 1797 - 1805 will also be present. Pics below; The Birmingham St. George's Day Association attended the 200th year commemoration of Trafalgar Day on Friday October 21st 2005 at 11:00 AM, at Nelson's Statue in the Bullring. This was organised by The Birmingham Trafalgar Day Organising Committee Professor Carl Chinn of the Birmingham St. Georges Day Association, gave an address on the history of the Birmingham men who served at Trafalgar. There was then a procession by service personnel and others including ourselves the Birmingham St. George's Day Association to the Birmingham Council House where Nelson's famous message in signal flags was flown, and the Lord Mayor took the salute. Festivities included music and stalls were present in Victoria Square. We had a stall which represented our association, and we sold articles for charity. The stall adjacent to us, Discovery Films donated monies from their sales to our organisation, for which they have our thanks. Picture below of our stall and committee. Note the weather was cold and wet!!!
At 4:30 Bells were rung at Cathedrals in Birmingham. More festivities continued over the weekend. There was a Haydon's Nelson Mass at St Philips Cathedral on Saturday night the 22nd by the Birmingham Choral Union. On Sunday the 23rd their was a service of dedication to Nelson at St. Martin's Church.
